Recording Services - Record Companies

In the digital world a traditional "record company" has become a bit obsolete, and as digital distribution begins to replace physical playback media, retooling of these concepts is necessary.

Thinking in terms of the creative cycle from idea to finished product, traditionally, the record company contracted with an artist and invested their own capital in recording artist output and distributing that media to sales outlets and promoting for the artist. In the digital age, this can still hold true, with "record companies" overseeing the technical production and distribution of an artist's creative works--in any form. The word "record" will mean "digital record."

Certainly, some artists prefer to DIY the entire creative cycle, including distribution and promotion of their own works, but others prefer to turn over certain sections of the creative cycle to a 3rd party, usually because either the artist is not interested in dealing with the technical details, or because the 3rd party offers advantages, perks, and/or contacts that would speed up or expand the reach of the artist. This is true of agents, as well.

That said, MGN offers and maintains a database of all operations that call themselves "record companies." The term will probably change at some point in the future, and will probably change because of MGN, but in the meantime, MGN will serve the current model. MGN provides the necessary data that describes what a particular record company is looking for (if anything), and if an artist indicates they want a record company to take over this section of the creative cycle, MGN flows to their profile this information.

Record companies with MGN Profiles can easily find the perfect artists for their various projects, and will find it very easy to create and develop an artist stable that can be packaged, promoted and booked for promotional efforts. MGN can offer record companies distribution channels, physical product manufacturing options, as well as a graphics creative suite, and participation in artist collaboration modules.

Partnerships can easily develop between a record company and a booking agent who is using MGN services to arrange tour itineraries for band stables, or find it practical to get into the booking business because of the MGN system.
