All metrics resulting from public or private downloads is available within the MGN Profile in the "Office" module for the artist, as well as within the profiles of MGN Member Record Companies, Agents, and other interested parties.
As with all MGN services, a small commission on each transaction is collected in the background. In these cases, when a song, ringtone, sheet music is purchased via the MGN Profile/Store, the fee is collected. All of the file conversions are done automatically via bots, and the specific distribution to outlets is done automatically.
Digital Creation Tracking
Inherent in the distributoin of intellectual property, is the digital right management issues, and MGN serves these issues by using a tracking code that accompanies each digital creation and its copies, whether it be CD/DVD track, MP3, WMV, ringtone, or PDF file (sheet music). When the file is moved or copied from one IP address to another IP address or directory, MGN robots are notified, and the file movement shows up in artist's Profile office. In this way, propogation of the creation can be tracked. MGN is not interested in blocking any propogation of files, only the acquisition of metrics. If it turns out that the metrics report a revenue "leak" somewhere as a result of system tampering, outright vandalism, or unknown propogation methods, MGN can then followup and discover ways to negotiate the rights, issues, or new paradigms at that time.
Obviously, there are operating system permission issues on servers and personal computers that will need to be addressed and handled, but the political will to do so needs to be expressed so that artists and their support systems can be transactionally present, whether actual money is being exchanged, or not. In fact, an entirely new paradigm needs to be considered on this. Rather than tracking a digital creation for the sole purpose of busting thieves, MGN is more interested in the propogation of the creation.
For example, with public file sharing, the old paradigm would want to know who shared what creation for the purpose of law enforcement around copyright infringement. The new paradigm wants to know to what degree is the creation being propogated. And that's all. The new paradigm wants propogation, and MGN may consider paying a microfee to anyone who shares artists' creations. That creation becomes the artist's calling card, and opens the door to revenue streams for the artist's creations collections, concert tickets, swag, movie/TV rights, endorsement sales, future releases, larger mailing list, etc., etc. The individual consumers become agents for the creations.
The emphasis must be taken off the commercialality of any individual creation, and put on the overall commercial value of the propogation of that creation. So, the creation with no propogation is worth very little, but a creation with huge propogation is very valuable. In other words, propogation comes first, not last.
