An example could be that singer/songwriter Joe Solo wants to hire bass and drums for a demo track. He has recorded guitar and vocals at home to a click track. He then can search the MGN musician database to find the available drummers and bassists whose styles he likes (or he can recruit non-MGN members to MGN). After contacting, scheduling and conferencing, he can send the guitar/vocal/click tracks to the drummer and bassist of choice, who can then record their contributions separately or in real-time while Joe is listening to them. The recordings can then be mixed using the MGN online editor and downloaded.
For songwriters this allows for many more creative options (see Musical Composition) in real time, but also offers an archiving system as an idea notebook that a collaborator can access and contribute to at their convenience and inspiration. A songwriter can also make available his unfinished works to any MGN Member to contribute to. For example, Joe Solo has archived a song with piano and vocals, but has moved on to another creative stream. That recorded archive could be downloaded by an MGN Member guitarist, who adds the perfect guitar riff and hook, and archives that. Then Band X comes along and falls in love with Joe Solo's song and that cool guitar riff, and decides to record a version of the song for their upcoming download compilation (album).
In this type of public creative environment MGN automatically creates the proper legal documents, releases, and contracts so that all contributors to a particular song get compensated with the song releases for sale (see Distributing). This can provide a creative boon to songwriters and performers, who may have otherwise never released commercially viable material, and find creative partners who would have otherwise never met.
