MGN maintains a database of every song ever recorded and/or written. It draws on existing databases for that purpose, and contributes to them in that the full body of work for indy artists isn't always included (unless it's got a UPC bar code), and much of the total recorded musical output is missing even from the most extensive databases, such as
GraceNote. These entries will be picked up over time, as music submissions via MGN are standarized.
These are the datapoints for each recorded track:
- Song Title
- Lyrics
- Original Composer(s)
- Original Date Recorded
- Original Performer
- Original Arranger
- Original Publisher
- Original Record Label of Release
- Original Date of Release
- Original Album Title
- New Date Recorded
- New Performer
- New Arranger
- New Record Label of Release
- New Date of Release
- New Album Title
- Original Recording Producer
- Original Recording Engineer
- Original Recording Studio/Location
- New Recording Producer
- New Recording Engineer
- New Recording Studio/Location
- Formats (Vinyl, Cassette, CD)
- Other Song Info
The database is cross-referential--that is, for example, the Kool & The Gang song, "Get Down On It," was recorded by the band at least three or four times, and released as many as a dozen times on different compilation albums over the years. By entering in the song title for a search, under "New Date of Release" will be when each version was released, as well as compilation release dates and album titles. Every entry about a particular song is compiled into a single search result.
Additionally, each song is accompanied by artist input as to the creative origin of the song, circumstances, and other interesting stories around the song (Other Song Info). This information is gleaned from diverse Internet sources as well as from direct artist contact. MGN considers this important for educational reasons, and endeavors to procure this information in an organized and prioritized manner. The data acquisition/verification would begin with well known songs down through their derivatives as a priority.
This database is interfaced with the Bands/Musician Database, and the Recording Databases.
